6 Barriers to Student Success
Based on feedback from our campus-wide survey, students have identified four primary barriers to their success: clarity of instructions, time management, motivation, and mental health.
How Can Clear Instructions Enhance Student Understanding and Reduce Anxiety?
Students thrive in environments where expectations are clear and instructions are easy to follow. Ambiguity in assignment guidelines or course objectives can lead to confusion, anxiety, and diminished learning outcomes. To improve clarity:
- Articulate Clear Guidelines: Clearly state all assignment guidelines and course objectives.
- Provide Examples: Use concrete examples to clarify complex points or expectations.
- Encourage Questions: Foster an environment where students feel comfortable seeking clarification.
FSW Student Take
I like the flexibility [of online classes] and being able to make it work on my own schedule. I would have to quit my job to take classes if they were the traditional model, and as a widow supporting two young children that’s not a financially viable option for me. It also allows me to care for my children on my schedule.
What Strategies Can Faculty Use to Help Students Manage Their Time More Effectively?
Balancing coursework, employment, and personal responsibilities can be overwhelming for students. Effective time management is a skill that can be learned and refined over time. We can assist by:
- Teach Time Management Skills: Incorporate time management tips or mini-workshops into your courses.
- Set Realistic Deadlines: Plan assignment and test schedules that consider students’ overall workload.
How Can Faculty Actively Foster Student Motivation Throughout the Course?
Staying motivated, especially during challenging times, is critical for student success. Our role includes inspiring and rekindling the intrinsic motivation within our students. To support their motivation:
- Link Learning to Real Life: Show how course content applies to real-world situations to increase its relevance.
- Provide Constructive Feedback: Give feedback that is timely and specific to encourage and guide students.
- Celebrate Achievements: Recognize and celebrate student efforts and successes to boost morale and motivation.
What Approaches Can Faculty Take to Support Students’ Mental Health and Foster a Positive Learning Environment?
Mental health challenges can significantly impede a student’s ability to succeed academically. Creating a supportive classroom environment is key to addressing this sensitive issue.
- Foster a Supportive Environment: Ensure your online classroom is inclusive and respectful.
- Guide to Resources: Refer students to the college’s mental health services and support mechanisms.
- Encourage School/Life Balance: Use assignment due times that promote sleep hygiene, remind students that nutrition and exercise have a direct impact on cognitive ability, and model self-care by establishing communication policies that demonstrate healthy boundaries.
Best Practices for Overcoming Student Barriers
- Foster Open Communication: Regularly check in with students and ensure they have clear channels for feedback to stay engaged and supported.
- Incorporate Flexibility: Use varied instructional methods and flexible deadlines to meet diverse learning needs and life circumstances.
- Promote Inclusivity and Collaboration: Provide opportunities for students to connect and collaborate and ensure course content is accessible and inclusive.
