You have just reviewed quite a few resources about creating various types of Works Cited entries, and now, you’re ready to get to work. But wait! You want to use something from this book, and you’re unsure of how exactly to cite it. In the interest of keeping things simple, this page offers a quick explanation of how to create Works Cited entries for chapters and republished resources that appear in this book.

Citing a Chapter from this Textbook

If you are citing a chapter in this book, you should treat it as “An Essay in an Anthology, Reference, or Collection” and combine this with the guidelines for citing eBooks. Thus, you would want something like the following:

Owens, Leonard III, et al. “Multimodal Composition: Overview.” Starting the Journey: An Intro to College Writing. Pressbooks, 2023. Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0).

Elements used in this citation example are author, chapter title, title of container, publisher, publication date, and copyright information.

Citing Republished Resources (a Republished Article, Video, etc.) that Originally Appeared Elsewhere

You would use this format if you are citing an essay or video resource that originally appeared elsewhere. The following strategy combines the “An Essay in an Anthology, Reference, or Collection,” “eBook,” and “Republished Book” options:

Miyake, Esperanza. “Why Binge-Watching TV Might Not Replace Weekly Installments.” The Conversation, 29 Jan. 2021. Rpt. in Starting the Journey: An Intro to College Writing. By Leonard Owens III, Tim Bishop, and Scott Ortolano. PressBooks, 2023. Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License,

Elements used in this citation example are author, chapter title, title of original container, publication date, supplemental element (original publication date), title of republished container, publisher, second publication date, copyright information.
